Enjoy the unique pleasure of watching hundreds of the world's most spectacular and colourful butterflies flying all around. You can see them feeding and flying in a wonderful tropical environment.

Our landscaped tropical greenhouse is the largest tropical butterfly display in the UK! Throughout the year we have over 250 different species of tropical butterfly sourced from 20 different countries. There are approximately 2 000 free flying individual butterflies, of all shapes, sizes and colours. Sometimes there are a few more, sometimes a few less.

Some of the butterflies you see flying around the Flight Area breed within the Butterfly Farm, the rest are imported from butterfly farmers in the tropics. All the places we buy butterflies from are either Conservation projects or Village projects. Butterfly breeding is the main source of income for most of the villagers. These breeding operations have been set up to enable communities to earn a living without causing any damage to the environment and wildlife around them. Not only is this good from a conservation point of view, it also allows families all over the tropics to earn a sustainable income and helps to preserve the rainforest whilst educating our visitors. One such project is the Kipepeo Butterfly Project

It's not all butterflies in the Flight Area! There is a large selection of tropical plants. Not only do they look beautiful but more importantly they feed the butterflies. Lantana is one of the most important nectar plants at the butterfly farm, with its heads of tightly packed blossoms rich in sugary nectar, it is the perfect food source for our butterflies. In Asia where Lantana comes from it is considered a weed!

In May 2022, twenty two Phantasmal Poison Frogs were released into the Flight Area! The frogs, also known as Epipedodates tricolour are a species of Poison Dart Frog which has a current International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) classification of vulnerable and decreasing.

They originate from Ecuador and are vibrantly coloured with stripes of green or yellow. In their native environment they are extremely toxic which is created by their diet. However, at the Butterfly Farm they are fed a special diet, so they do not create toxins and are completely harmless to visitors.

The frogs make a beautiful chirping sound and call to each other, listen carefully and you will hear them!

Have fun spotting our trio of resident iguanas! Prudence, Bennie and Buddy are green iguanas, originating from South America. Prudence was donated to the Butterfly Farm about 9 years ago, Bennie was donated in 2020 and the newsest addition is the beautiful Buddy, who was donated in May 2023.

They like to hide up in the trees and bask in the warmth on top of the heaters where they like to keep a watchful eye on the goings on below!

Be cautious of droppings if you are walking underneath them!

They are magnificent creatures, excellent swimmers and love to feed on leaves, flowers and fruit.

There are a number of tropical birds that live in the rainforest flight area, they have all been specially chosen because they are non-insectivorous. This means they like to eat seeds and fruit and not our butterflies!

We have two colourful Indian ring necked parakeets and new arrivals, the round and colourful roul roul partridges and a striking crested pigeon!
