Giant Iguana’s take up residence at Stratford Butterfly Farm!

Two giant sized Iguanas have taken up residence at the Stratford Butterfly Farm after being donated by ‘Bags of Reptiles’ of Evesham. The Green Iguanas named “Stumpy” and “Princess” are over 4 feet long and approximately 10 years old. Stumpy was apparently over amorous with Princess so she bit his tail which now has a kink! The otherwise devoted couple can be seen in the lush tropical foliage and are reportedly very happy in their new environment, joining a red Iguana named “Dusty” who was found wandering a rubbish dump last year.
The Green Iguana is a large lizard reaching sizes of 4 - 6 feet long. They originate from Central to South America and live in a tropical existence. Iguanas can live up to 15 years of age. They are an arboreal animal which means they live in trees. Some species never set foot on the ground again once they hatch and climb into the trees. Green Iguanas can fall for 10m/50 feet from trees and land unhurt as they use their claws to break the fall against branches on the way down.
The Green Iguana is a greenish grey colour with black stripes. Red Iguanas are nothing more than a colour variation of the green. It still retains the black body stripes but has a red tinge to them and the body is predominantly red instead of green. Their tail is about 3 times the length of their body. Iguanas have a flap of skin below the chin which is referred to as a Dewlap and they have a spiny looking crest that extends the length of their body. Iguanas also have a third eye, a pale set of scales on top of its head that is able to detect movement and shadows.
To see the Iguanas and hundreds of other spectacular butterflies, insects, reptiles and spiders visit the Stratford Butterfly Farm from 10:00am to 5.30pm every day of the week.
