Caterpillar Room

Some of the worlds largest, spikiest, hairiest and most camouflaged caterpillars are on show with cocoons, giant silkmoths and shining pupae hanging on the plants. Lots to see, but look hard or you'll miss them!

Life Cycle

In the caterpillar room you can see first hand all the stages for the butterfly Life cycle as well as a great collection of fat caterpillars.

From a female butterfly laying an egg on a leaf through the munching podgy caterpillar stage to the fascinating chrysalis to a newly emerged butterfly.

Fat squishy green caterpillars, very camouflaged!

Brightly coloured, spikey, hairy, smelly, caterpillars!

Emerging Cage

Just before you come to the exit of the caterpillar area you will see the Emerging cage where we hang all of the Chrysalis (pupae) that come form abroad. This is one of the most important areas of the farm because it is here where the butterflies emerge (come out) of the chrysalis and prepare their wings for the first flight.

Citrus Swallowtail Caterpillars

At the beginning of their caterpillar life these squidgy caterpillars look a bit like bird poo!

Owl Butterfly Caterpillars

These fat brown caterpillars can be pests in Banana plantations in South America! Just a few of these caterpillars can eat all of the leaves form a Banana plant in a few weeks -Ahhh! No Bananas. from a distance it look like they have a row of spikes down the middle of their back but on closer inspcetion these are actually a collection of soft hairs.
